Controls Engineer

Job Description Avery Dennison is currently seeking a Controls Engineer to join our Engineered Films Plants. The controls engineer will be responsible for daily troubleshooting and repair of electrical, control, and communication systems. Additional responsibilities will include executing on improvement opportunities (safety, FPY, throughput, scrap) and providing technical expertise for capital projects. The position will be tasked with working with and training other members of the maintenance team, driving root cause analysis, and improving controls documentation. This position is exempt, and some off-shift and weekend work will be expected occasionally for troubleshooting and project work. Job Description: Activities and duties may vary dependent upon site specific needs and daily work assignments. Essential functions may include, but are not limited to: Troubleshoot, establish root cause, and resolve issues pertaining to all electrical systems, including: programmable logic controllers (PLC), drives, control systems, and communication systems. Provide 24x7 manufacturing support to resolve safety, quality, production and scrap issues that arise on a day-to-day basis. Perform a wide variety of functions such as installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment for generating, distributing, and utilizing electrical energy. Uses instruments to test circuits and replaces or installs new power, light, electronic, and control circuits. Troubleshoot electrical malfunctions, inspects circuits and wiring for shielding and grounding, and tests electrical equipment for safety and efficiency. Repair complex electrical equipment, including motors, switches, switchboards, electrical mechanisms, automated machines, controls, panels, relays, circuit breakers, communication systems and alarms. Work from schematics, drawings, layouts, or other specifications to locate and diagnose trouble in the electrical system or equipment. Drive standardization and modernization control, drive, communication, and SCADA systems throughout the division; assess gaps against best practices and develop plans to close gaps. Develop and maintain drive, controls, and SCADA system best practices through collaboration with other process technology teams. Identify safety, quality, production, and scrap reduction opportunities. Drive engineering solutions to these issues. Assist in development of capital plans to support the divisional drives and controls strategy. Provides support and technical expertise for technology upgrade projects to improve product quality and manufacturing effectiveness. Build manufacturing sites' knowledge in controls engineering through collaboration, training and talent assessment. Interact with Maintenance and Engineering team to ensure equipment reliability. Create system controls documentation to compliment maintenance technician training and understanding. Present information and effectively communicate with divisions cross-functionally. Verbally present findings to team and management. Create and updateelectrical schematics and drawings. Qualifications Minimum requirement of an associates degree in controls technology or a related field of study from an accredited university. 2+ years of experience in controls or electrical engineering function in a manufacturing environment Expertise in automation, drive and control systems including PLCs: Allen Bradley (PLC5, CompactLogix, MicroLogix, ControlLogix), Siemens Drives: Parker Eurotherm, AB Powerflex, Siemens (S120, G120, V120) HMI software: WW Intouch, AB Factory Talk Studio, RSView 32, Data collection systems including Wonderware Historian Knowledge of Safety PLC and associated hardware Knowledgeable with National Electric Code High-energy, self-directed, self-starter Ability to execute multiple projects with minimal supervision Excellent verbal and written communication skills among all levels of the organization Hands-on ability to work through symptoms and get to root cause Experience in troubleshooting equipment and process issues Ability to understand and troubleshoot PLC ladder logic and make system edits as needed Ability to understand and troubleshoot function block logic and make system edits as needed in both PLC and drive controls Successful project management and completion Team player; able to coordinate efforts across functions, plants and divisions Demonstrated ability to lead and work in a team environment Proficiency in AutoCAD Preferred, but not required Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Experienced in converting, roll coating and web handling systems and experienced in PSA technology Experience with extrusion systems Experience with tension control
